Muscle and push up advice?

my main problem about my self is that i am sort of overweight but am very tall so it doesnt look like i am over weight. my arm span is longer than my height and am 6'1. it is very difficult for me to do push ups, i can barely do one. i have been practicing by doing modified push ups and lifting dumbells (2 weeks) but nothing has helped. i am 195-200. but thats after summer. before summer i was 189 because i had basketball practices so that helped me lose some pounds. i am starting to join bball again so i will be exercising hopefully and i dry to not eat fat foods. i just need to gain muscle and do push ups because i cannot do any. i was thinknig protein shakes but have heard that that causes weight gain and i dont want that. i lift daily but i see no results and it has been over 3 weeks
